G’day everyone,
One billion US dollars is available to help start-up companies accelerate the transition to new energy sources.
Microsoft’s Bill Gates and others have invested heavily into a venture-capital fund to help scientists and others reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.
Goals include reducing greenhouse-gas emissions significantly, pulling drinkable water out of the most arid climates, developing affordable fusion reactors, among others.
I’m excited about micro-tough tech companies solving the problems with money usually available only to proven industry leaders — safe investments. This group, however, is focused on making a real difference. It reminds me of Tesla and SpaceX — companies created to push beyond the snail-like pace of comfortable developments — those minor modifications to existing processes that make them a little better or slightly more efficient.
This stuff, including concepts like crowd-funding, give us proof that we’re not a bunch of cynical lemmings. Rock on toward Singularity!
A slight departure, but not far off course, is another concept program that is helping us along. It’s crowd sourcing and crowd funding together to solve problems.
A few years ago, on the TV sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” Howard developed a better toilet for the space station. The elimination and disposal of human waste while in space is nearly an epic failure — a very messy story at best.
Well, through HeroX, NASA solicited project proposals from anyone from anywhere around the world. Nicknamed “NASA’s Poop Challenge,” the project was created and funded to create a system inside astronaut spacesuits that could remove and store human waste for up to 3 days. The purpose was to provide spacefarers a means for remaining somewhat comfortable during an emergency situation in space.
Well, I submitted a proposal to modify the astronauts’ diet and digestive enzymes to eliminate all waste before it left the body. This means zero waste, and it would be accomplished within the gut, where all materials passing through would be consumed by specific bacteria and the like. Their outputs would be sugars and other energy sources digestible within the same human gut. In this manner, even the most vile gunk would be chemically converted and used. There would be no waste to worry about as the human digestive system becomes 100% effective.
How’d I do? Not even placed in the top 100. Some funky little box or something won. I’m not bitter, those turds ...
